We are excited to announce that the new Mashable iPhone native app is now available in the iTunes App Store! We’ve been working (and still are) with the Mashable team on some very exciting initiatives, including the launch of their mobile optimized site as well as the launch of the recent mashable.com redesign. This is a particularly exciting launch for us and we’re extremely proud of the app.

Mashable is an exciting client to have, as technology and innovation is their business. There is constant collaboration and exploration on emerging technologies; from evaluating start-ups with unique service offerings to developing for overwhelmingly popular mobile devices to even prototyping for the latest portable devices (before they're even ready to ship). But it’s not just about playing with the latest technologies; it’s about understanding them and their demand as well as their impact on an audience, and developing for that.

The new Mashable iPhone Application is just the first version; expect some exciting updates in the very near future. We wanted to ensure that we didn’t just make an app to make an app; it had to be a faster and much more elegant experience with an interface to match. The newest member of the nclud team, Brandon Jones, built the application within just 30 days! We put him to work as soon as he got here and he’s been impressing us ever since. A special shout out to our own Dan Drinkard for providing the magic that actually powers the very dynamic nature of the application, what’s happening under the hood is a bit impressive (but for another post).

Great work. This looks really, really nice.

I’ll agree with what Aaron said.  Lovely.

Looks great guys!  Really looking forward to hearing what “magic” Dan put into this.

One critique I have though. The “DONE” button is rather small and could pose a challenge for our female counter parts to be able to tap on it without their finger nails getting in the way. Thoughts?

  4. Alex Giron

    February 18th 2010

@Aaron Thanks! We wanted to provide mashable an app that not only functioned well but was also aesthetically pleasing. You don’t see that much in the publication app space. Turned out pretty well if I say so myself :)

  5. Alex Giron

    February 18th 2010

@Matt There will definitely be some adjustments to the UI in the next few releases, the “done” button might be one of those things we look at.

  6. Dan Drinkard

    February 18th 2010

@Matt All the credit is due to Brandon on this one; he’s a magician to be sure!

    February 18th 2010

Thanks for the comments ... we hope the app is well received, but we’re definitely going to be adjusting it as we get more feedback and add more features.

    February 18th 2010

@Dan Great work on the drag-to-refresh functionality. Feels seamless.

@Alex I look forward to seeing where you take it next.

This is the best App on my phone, it’s so smooth running, and really easy to use. Puts many if not all other, media apps to shame!
    Great work!

    @Krislicked,

Thanks! We’re glad to hear that ... we work with a lot of publications and do a lot with mobile, so we wanted to create exactly that experience.

I can’t get this app to update to recent content eaven on 1.1.  ( still wiliam shatner on main page…)

I love the look and feel but it is not working for me. Anayone else with this problem!

    March 10th 2010

    Sebastien,

Thanks for the input; unfortunately, you’re not alone. There is a small group of users (about 6) that are reporting similar issues. Of the reports we’ve seen, the only similarity is that all are based outside of the U.S.

We’re looking into the issue and are hoping to figure out the big “why”. You might be getting an email from our senior developer (if you don’t mind). We’re trying to figure out what other commonalities you all share which might help us better find a solution.

We’ll be pushing out a v1.2 update on Monday ... hopefully with is comes a fix for you.

I love this app. All around great Except one thing. It eternally tries to load post-article commemts, however they never actually finish loading. Not sure what’s up. First I thought that I might need to delete app and then re-load. Tried that. Restarted the iPhone. Nothing seems to change the outcome. Is anyone else having this issue?
    Thanks,
    S. Casey

I am too one of those that can not refresh content. Slider for refresh works, loading indicator spins, stops spinning but everything stays the same…

    March 15th 2010

...There are Two Mashable Apps in The App Store. After having this problem of Not Being Able to Access Comments from this ‘M!’ app, I downloaded the Other one as well. The Other Works Fine—-Comments come up, no prob. I’m sure this one will be fixed in time, but for now I’m using both.

I’m also unable to refresh the content, it is the same since install. No mather how many times I’m trying to refresh :(

Otherwise really great app I love it!

    p.s. I’m also outside U.S.

We do believe we have the issue resolved. We’ll be pushing a v1.2 update shortly for all of you—it’ll also include some extra goodies as well.

    March 16th 2010

    Still nothing?

  20. S. Casey

    March 16th 2010

...still nothing has changed for me either. ‘Loading indicator’ still spinning everlastingly, and not ever completing or loading comments at all. I think we have to wait ‘till the above mentioned update is pushed through, no?
      Hey guys,
When will that update be available to run from the App Store??!

  21. Todd

    March 17th 2010

When I installed the app it asked if I would like push notifications.  I did, although after having it on for a few days, I’d prefer to have it off.  I looked under Settings / Mashable and there is no option to turn off push notifications.  Could you tell me where I might find it?

    Thanks much!

  22. Dan Drinkard

    March 17th 2010

Todd, that setting actually gets put under the notifications menu in the settings app. Messed with me a little bit when I first tried it too.

  23. Todd

    March 17th 2010

    Ah yes!  Thanks Dan!

I’d like to be able to comment on articles with the app using my Disqus account.  This would provide a tighter integration with Mashable web so that online presences look consistent whether posting from the web or the app.

  25. S. Casey

    March 17th 2010

...The other Mashable App in the app store allows comments thru Disqus. Give it a shot. It’s the other one when you search Mashable in the app store , and it too is free.

    March 18th 2010

    Update:
We’ve corrected for the bug being mentioned here, it was a time stamp issue affecting a small group of international users. The v1.2 update should be available for download in the next week or two.

With respect to comments, in v1.1 we do have integration through Disqus; unfortunately due to limitations with their API, we can’t yet allow users to login with their Disqus account. We are hoping to have this fixed in a future update (but not in the v1.2 update).

  27. S. Casey

    March 18th 2010

Hey Martin. I am a US user and I’ve had problems with with viewing comments from the get go. You said it had to do with a timestamp issue in regards to International users? Well, what’s the cause for me experiencing that same issue from here in the States. Btw, I love the app. Beautiful UI. ..Just giving feedback to help. :-)

Pls add Tweetdeck as a supported app

  29. Martin Ringlein

    March 22nd 2010

    Karen,

You’ll be happy to know that we’ve been working with the team at TweetDeck to get their app in the list ... they will be included within the v1.2 update (which has been submitted and should be available for download shortly).

  30. S. Casey

    March 22nd 2010

Yay! I’m glad to hear that the new update will be available soon! I want to use your app, but like to comment a lot on the articles that I like, so I am looking forward to that commenting ‘snafu’ being resolved in the update. Bueno!

Yay!! You did it!! The new update Does take care of the ‘loading comments’ bug for me (iPhone 3G user)!! Thank you. Good job!

  33. S. Casey

    March 23rd 2010

Any of you iPhone users out there that are stilll having trouble reading and posting comments AFTER the update may have to delete, then reinstall the app for the update to Take. I had to do this, then it worked fine. :-)

    March 24th 2010

A Little Feedback on the New Update after I’ve now used the app several times today. For some reason this last time I am experiencing the same problem as before the update, ie. The ‘everlasting loading of comments with no completion of task’ scenario. I even rebooted my iPhone for good measure as well as tried many different articles to see if it was just an isolated experience and lo, it is not. The investigation continues.

  35. S. Casey

    March 24th 2010

    Hey Guys,
I have sussed out the problem a little further and it looks like the aforementioned issue (regarding reading and posting comments) may indeed be an AT&T ISP problem. My apologies for premptively blaming the app.
    Best,
    Sean Casey

NOTE: I have been e-mailing regularly Martin, but of late with no response. Not trying to be a thorn in the side as it were, just trying to help shake out the cause of this article comment viewing/posting conundrum that seems to a half life that’s longer than we all had hoped. :-)
Here’s to success of the app in all it’s aspects.
